"Run Lola Run" is the story of a young woman, Lola, who races against time to gather enough money to help her boyfriend. What makes the film truly remarkable is how the director explores multiple timelines, showing how each small decision Lola makes leads to entirely different outcomes—not just for her, but for everyone she encounters along the way. It's astonishing to think that over two decades ago, the director was already exploring what we now call the ‘multiverse’ concept. I was especially impressed by the way the director portrayed the characters' fates—using rapid flash cuts to depict the arc of an entire life in just a few frames. Without exaggeration, this film is absolutely in my top three of all time. It has greatly inspired my own artistic vision and approach to filmmaking.

“Kamikaze Girls” tells the story of two small-town girls with completely different styles who become friends and help each other pursue their dreams. By just watching the very first five seconds, you can see the film's distinct personality is unmistakable: a bold visual aesthetic, highly saturated colors, and exaggerated cinematic language all contribute to its unique charm. The movie brilliantly reflects two major youth subcultures in early 2000s Japan—the passionate, rebellious biker gangs and the whimsical, fantasy-driven world of Lolita fashion. These seemingly incompatible styles are skillfully woven together by the director, creating a vibrant collision of cultures. The result is a film that is both energetic and deeply touching—a perfect example of Japan’s uniquely cinematic voice.
